When it comes to getting your site indexed in the search engines it is important for 2 years or more because the search engines will see that you are in it for the long haul and you will have your authority built. The longer that readers will see you around on the web, the more they will know that you are established and they will come back to your site and maybe even buy from you. If you stick with it long enough, earning extra money online will lead to a full time income and you can be in business for yourself.
One thing that you need to know about your website is; you cannot put up a site with a few pages and let it sit there and expect visitors to come. You must continue to write good web copy and create several pages with links; this is important to good seo. Once you write enough web copy and have many pages; 30 or more at least, you will see people pour in to your site. Do not go into this trying to post pages with ads and things to sell in the beginning, you will get disappointed when you haven't made any sales.
You will make sales once you are established, but just concentrate on building those pages and then start selling when the site starts getting hits.
