eBay Search Tips & Tricks

Here are some tips and tricks for using eBay's search engine to find exactly what you're looking for. This skill is useful for both buyers and sellers.For buyers, mastering the eBay search system allows you to find hidden gems that others don't see. Generally, the fewer watchers/bidders an item has, the lower its selling price will be.
As a seller, understanding eBay's search system helps your bottom line. Being aware of how buyers might search for a product helps you create listings with more descriptive titles. Further, search mastery helps you find competing listings so you can price your item accordingly.
eBay's search engine only finds listings that contain all the words you typed in the search box. That means the more terms you use in your search phrase, the more precise your search results will be. Consider all the features / functions / traits of the item you want. Some possible attributes to include:
Manufacturer / BrandModel Name / NumberColorSize
For example, let's say we're searching for floor mats for our vintage 1967 VW Beetle. A search for "beetle floormats" would return thousands of results with very few relevant ones. Using more words -- eg., "VW vintage beetle floormats ladybug black" -- returns fewer, much more relevant listings.
Most sellers try to cram as many ways to describe an item as they can fit in the listing title, but there is never enough room for all the variations. To cast as wide a net as possible in your search, think of all the different ways your item might be described. Then think of synonyms for those terms.
Some ways to generate more search words:
Different ways to say the same thing. For example, laptop / notebook, Bug / Beetle.Abbreviations. For example, Volkswagen / VW.Misspellings or alternate spellings. For example, floor mat / floormat.
In our search for floor mats, we could try different phrases to find as many listings as possible. For example:
VW beetle floormatsvolkswagen bug floor mats... and so on ...
Lowercase, uppercase, mixed case... it doesn't matter, so don't worry about it.
Sellers: This is a good tip to remember when creating listings. Use capitalization in the title and subtitle to draw attention to your listing, not to have proper grammar. The floor mats listing might be titled like so to maximize visibility:
FLOOR MATS complete set rubber VW BUG BEETLE vintage
The all-uppercase words immediately catch the reader's eye and tells them the most important information about the item for sale.
To search for one word OR another, put the words in parentheses, divided by commas.
To further refine our search for floor mats, we can consider other ways to describe the item. For example, the VW Beetle is often called the Bug. We can look for listings that contain either of these words by surrounding the words in parentheses:
(bug, beetle)
You can also have multiple OR groupings. For example, the following pattern looks for listings that contain "bug" OR "beetle" AND "vintage OR air cooled OR collector" AND "vw OR volkswagen":
(bug, beetle) (vintage, air cooled, collector) (vw, volkswagen)
If you put a minus sign in front of a word (eg., "-carpet"), you're telling eBay's search engine to not include any listing that contains those words.
This feature is useful for eliminating items related to the one you're looking for. For example, in our search for the perfect lady bug rubber floor mats for a VW Beetle, we might use negative words like "-dodge", "-carpet", or "-jetta" to focus our search results.
The following example says look for listings that "contain 'VW' and 'floormats' but not 'jetta'":
vw floormats -jetta
This pattern also works with an OR grouping. For example, the following pattern means "DO NOT include listings that contain 'carpet', 'jetta', OR 'passat':
-(carpet, jetta, passat)
An asterisk (*) in your search phrase means "any combination of any letters, numbers, or symbols can go here".
For example, searching for "floormat*" would match "floormat" and "floormats".
If you put double quotes around a phrase, the results will only show listings where the words in quotes are in the exact order you specified.
So if you put double quotes around "lady bug floor mats", only listings that match the order of the words will show up in the results. That means listings that use the same words, but in a different order, will not be included.
Using a few of the preceding tactics, we can create a super search query that gets us exactly what we want.
(vw, volkswagen) (bug, beetle) (floor mat*, floormat*) -(jetta, passat, rabbit, carpet)
This search query is asking for listings that match the following criteria:
contains "vw" OR "volkswagen", ANDcontains "bug" OR "beetle", AND contains words beginning with "floor mat" OR "floormat", ANDdoes NOT contain any of the words "jetta" OR "passat" OR "rabbit" OR "carpet".

Affiliate Marketing Tips

Unlike traditional ads where you are paid for impressions or clicks, affiliates are only paid when/if a specific action is performed. The action might be a purchase or signing up for a newsletter, but regardless, you are not paid until you've compelled your readers to act.
With that in mind, here are the Top 10 Commandments for affiliate marketing success.
The most successful way to use affiliate programs is to anticipate and meet the needs of your readers. Consider why they are coming to your site. What are you providing that they are looking for? Make sure the affiliate products you are promoting provide a solution to your audience's problems.
If you are writing about sports, don't put up affiliate ads for printer toner just because everyone has a printer and those programs have a high payout. The people who are coming to read commentary or get stats for their favorite teams aren't thinking about those things when they're on your site.
The more relevant the ads are to your readers, the more likely they will use them.
Readers are savvy. They know an affiliate link when they see one. If you break their trust by promoting a product you don't believe in or take advantage of their visit with too many ads, they will leave and never come back.
It is your repeat visitors that will drive traffic. They are the ones who will give you linkbacks, spread the word, and recommend your site as the go-to place for valuable content. You need to build a relationship based on genuine content.
If your visitors don't think you're being honest, they won't read anything else you have to say.
Think of affiliate ads as additional resources that complement your content. Give value to your content by making it helpful, useful, and informative.
Don't put up a list of your favorite books, hoping people will click on the affiliate link, purchase the books (just because you listed them), so you can cash in on a sale. Take some time to write a detailed review, and use affiliate ads to point them in the right direction if they decide to act on your information. That's what affiliate ads are for. If you write a great review recommending a book and readers buy the book because of it, you should get something for that.
But just throwing out links to products with no rhyme or reason will result in a quick exit by visitors.
Always disclose your affiliations. Your readers will appreciate your honesty, and will feel better about contributing to your earnings. If they sense that you are being less than honest about your affiliations, they are savvy enough to bypass your link and go directly to the vendor just to avoid giving you referral credit.
Honesty and full disclosure is a necessary part to building a loyal reader base. They know they are supporting you by using your referral links. Make them happy and eager to do so.
Take the time to go through all the different options for products or services available through the programs. Put some thought into which products or services your readers may need or like. Also, change the ads around often, try different ones, and use different graphics and text to see which are the most effective.
It may take some time before you figure out the best formula, and you may also find that you need to continually rotate ads to attract more attention.
If one particular program doesn't seem to be working for you, try another one.
Affiliate programs don't look the same. They offer different products, services, and payment structures. Some programs will have a lifetime payout on sales while others will limit it to 30-90 days. Some programs allow much more flexibility in the types of ad units available, as well as colors and design so it fits better on your site's layout.
Also, check your favorite vendors to see if they run their own affiliate program. Sometimes you can go directly to the source. You're not limited to big affiliate networks.
Integrate systematic ad testing into your strategy to maximize your profits.
Your old content can still be valuable even though it's no longer on your front page. Take advantage of the long term opportunities by making sure you provide timeless content.
If visitors come across your older content first, and find that it offers dated information, they will leave right away. Of course, information moves forward, so relevant content changes quickly. You can make your content timeless simply by adding links to your updated articles on your old ones.
Many platforms allow you to show "most recent" or "most popular" or "related articles" on every page, so no matter how old the article is, it will always show access to your new ones. Your old content can make money for you indefinitely.
Affiliate revenue grows and builds up with time. Remember that some programs offer lifetime payouts. If you refer a visitor, you may continue to make money from that one visitor even if he doesn't come back to your site. Also, as long as you have referral links still active in your old posts, they may still payout for you.
Affiliate programs aren't a get rich quick plan, but it provides opportunity to make passive income in the future.
Keep up to date on the latest offerings of your affiliate programs. New ad units, advertisers, and tools are constantly being added to improve usability and be more visually appealing. Small changes go a long way in motivating action by readers. You may be left out in the dust by being complacent with your strategy.
Don't get lazy about monitoring trends and exploring new opportunities.
Above all else, your content must be your highest priority.
Your content is your foundation, the life blood on which the site exists. Without valuable and helpful content, readers won't come. Focus on providing excellent content, and the monetizing strategies will work out.
Once you start compromising your content to cater to the affiliate programs or any other money making venture, you will lose your readers. Once that happens, you will lose the opportunity to receive any earnings from any of your ads, be they CPM, CPC, or referral based.

Firefox 3 = Best Web Browser

Firefox 3 was released last week, and it's hands down the best Web browser I have ever used (and I've used a lot). It's so much better than anything else out there that you should make it your default browser and do whatever you can to get your company to do the same. It's free, it's very fast, it's got thousands of useful add-ons, it protects you, and best of all, it makes browsing the Internet fun again. Try it for a week and you'll be a believer too.
Here are my top 5 reasons why you should upgrade to Firefox 3 (or try it out for the first time) today.
Browsing the Web feels faster on Firefox 3 than on other browsers I've used recently (including Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 2, Safari 3, Opera 8). (benchmarks)
The rendering engine -- a browser's core code that translates HTML into the webpages you see -- has been overhauled. Webpages are loading faster.
The browser feels significantly snappier when switching tabs, even if there are tabs still loading in the background. I often have dozens of tabs open at the same time. With Firefox 2, there would be a slight pause when switch tabs.
If you use a Web based email client (like Gmail or Yahoo mail), or use other Web 2.0 style sites, you'll appreciate the optimizations made to the JavaScript engine. Two subtle user interface changes are nothing short of revolutionary.
Location Bar (Web Address Bar) -- Firefox 3's new "Awesome Bar" (nicknamed by beta testers) lets you search for a Web address based on the content's title instead of the URL. Now you don't have to remember a website's URL to use the location bar. Just start typing in the name of your favorite website, and you'll be presented with a list of options to choose from. See the screenshot of the Awesome Bar. Note that I was typing in the name of the content I was looking for, not the URL like you have to do for all other browsers.) True Page Resizing -- The way Firefox 3 resizes webpages is how all future browsers will do it. Images are now resized as well, so that the entire webpage scales up or down proportionally. See the screenshots of resized webpages. Note that the image ads are resized in proportion to the resized text. (You can resize a webpage by holding down the CNTL key while pressing + or -.)
Another improvement I love is the enlarged "back" button. By far the most used navigation button, I'm surprised it took this long for browser designers to come up with a bigger button!
The download manager has also gotten an upgrade. It's now possible to resume downloads even after restarting Firefox.
Phishing is the scam practice of trying to get your banking information. Often via a fake website designed to look like PayPal or other legitimate banking sites.
Firefox 3 displays a warning if it thinks the website is potentially dangerous. See this screenshot of the anti-phishing features in action. Note the fake PayPal URL in the location bar.
This is a big deal for people who work online. If you have Firefox open all day and like to have multiple tabs open, Firefox 2 would keep using up more and more memory until you shut it down. There have been days when I had to restart Firefox 2 several times because it had slowed my computer down too much.
After a week of only using Firefox 3, it's been as fast at the end of the day as at the beginning. No restarts required at all.

Twitter 101 for Small Business

Twitter (www.twitter.com) is a platform for posting very short messages (also called "tweets") of 140 characters or less. There are many websites and applications you can use to post to and read . You only receive tweets from people you choose to follow. Post (also known as a status updates) to Twitter are commonly called tweets to differentiate them from Facebook status updates or blog posts.
"Tweet" can be used as a noun: "The tweet you sent about taxes was interesting. Thanks!"
"Tweet" can also be used as a verb: "Tweeting interesting links would find helpful is a sure way to gain more followers."
The beauty of Twitter is you can craft your own Twitter sphere by choosing to follow certain people. Navigate to that user's Twitter homepage (eg., mine is at http://twitter.com/gregorygo, and click on the "Follow" button. You will now see that user's tweets when you're logged in to Twitter.
To reply to or reference another Twitter user, put the @ symbol in front of their username.
For example, my Twitter username is "gregorygo". If you wanted to send me a tweet (ie., post a tweet that I would see), put "@gregorygo" somewhere in your twee

To retweet means to post someone else's tweet and crediting them with it. The convention for retweeting is to put "RT @username" in front of the tweet you are retweeting. It's polite to leave the original tweet as unedited as possible, though it's acceptable to edit the tweet for length or clarity.

Twitter's decision to have a wide-open API (letting developers access all the same public data available to itself) is critical for their success. Hundreds (thousands?) of websites, iPhone apps, desktop programs, and other Twitter clients have sprung up to make it easier for you to interact with Twitter.
Some Twitter apps use the available data for statistics. For example, you can use Twitter Counter to track the number of followers you have over time.
You don't need to install one of these 3rd-party clients to use Twitter. You can always use the basics of tweeting from the Twitter website or via SMS text messages.

Why You Will Definitely Fail to Set Up an Internet Business If You Ignore This Information

Wireless Tech Innovators Watch Closely as FCC Approves White Spaces for Wi-Fi Testing

The possibility of massive Wi-Fi hot spots covering the entire U.S. took another step towards becoming a reality today. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will allow approved networks and devices to utilize airwave gaps between TV broadcasts. Many believe that the FCC decision will begin a new era in wireless broadband access.The unused spectrum between station broadcasts - commonly referred to as "white spaces" - presents a new avenue for wireless broadband access. The FCC will hold a testing phase of operations in Wilmington, N.C., that is scheduled to begin Jan. 26. The small-market testing is designed to address concerns from venues that use wireless microphones and TV stations, who fear that the use of white space networks will interfere with their own broadcasts.
To help monitor this issue, the FCC has created a database that will be run by Spectrum Bridge who will oversee the sharing of airwaves between broadband devices and mics. This will allow venues to register their events and be given a designated signal. Any white space device using the same signal would be required to periodically check in with the database and be given a new channel that is not being used for performances.
Television stations claim that using the white space signals between broadcast signals will cause interference to their transmissions. Music performers bring a similar claim about the proposed interference with their wireless microphones and doubt the effectiveness of the database assigned to oversee this matter.
While both groups are strongly opposed to the use of white spaces, Congress presents a larger obstacle because they are not entirely enthusiastic about the creation of more unlicensed frequencies. The House of Representatives recently passed a bill that is designed to prevent the FCC from designating any future TV spectrum it receives for unlicensed use. The FCC would have to turn those signals into mobile broadband licenses and then sell off to the highest bidder.
If enforced, these policies would prevent the FCC from determining who could develop these unlicensed signals and severely curb innovation.
Obstacles aside, tapping into these airwaves is expected to greatly increase the number of cheap or even free access points throughout the country. Many believe that white spaces have the potential to create a Wi-Fi network that could cover the entire country. Proponents of white spaces believe that a national Wi-Fi network could be used as the base broadband connection for rural communities and serve as the bond to link smart grids together.
The white space signals provide a more effective communication signal because they operate on a lower frequency. This enables the signal to cover larger distances; some estimates predict that it could cover 16 times the area of a regular Wi-Fi hot spot. The signals also have a greater effectiveness because they can pass through with ease and are capable of providing speeds up to 100 megabits per second.
Top companies like Google, Microsoft, HP, and Dell have championed the use of white spaces for years. The low cost of white spaces could reduce the reliance on current high-speed networks for wireless and mobile devices. This would require the creation of new baseband chips to take advantage of the new signal. Microsoft predicts that the use of white spaces would generate a technology production storm. They believe that it would generate between $3.9 and $7.3 billion a year through the production of new technologies and products.

Affiliate Program Basics

Affiliate programs have become a standard component of most online businesses. With thousands of companies and dozens of networks offering affiliate programs, it can be hard to know where to begin. Understanding the basics will help you make good decisions as you begin affiliate marketing on your website.There are three types of affiliate marketers:
Full-time: Exist solely to promote other businesses. Part-time: Employ affiliate programs as a major part of their business plan, creating a significant percentage of their annual revenues.Side-line: Promote just one or two companies. For example many promote their Web host, in order to help cover their costs of hosting.
The amount of time required to implement an affiliate program is minimal as these programs will most commonly be placed on your existing website(s), and most programs provide ad copy, images and tracking links. Of course, the most compelling reason to begin affiliate marketing is income generation. So regardless of your type of online business you should at least consider some form of affiliate marketing.
You work hard to create traffic for your site – you build a busy street. Now, if you create some billboards on this busy street, you’ll make more money. Of course, with affiliate programs you receive payment for creating an action, not just for displaying an ad, but if you can create more revenue from the same amount of traffic – well that just makes good business sense.
Some popular affiliate networks are:
AffiliateFuel: their advertisers represent the major industries, with criteria that are stricter than Commission Junction (see below).Click Bank: primarily digital products, including downloadable e-books.Commission Junction: covers every major industry: travel, retail goods, marketing, and even automotive. Google AdSense: primarily text ads and payment is for "clicks", not transaction based.
As you begin planning, there are some decisions to be made:
Will I work with just one affiliate network or many?
Initially, it’s often best to choose one, and then expand once you learn what works and what is profitable.
Will I work directly with the company, or through a network?
Many sites have an "Affiliate Page" on their site, and it’s a great way to choose your favorite vendor and promote them on your site. Because each program has to be setup individually, this can take some time if you need more than a few. With a network, you can apply for many programs at the click of a mouse.
Do I have the volume to generate significant revenue on clicks alone?
You’ll need a very busy street to realize any profits from click programs. Of course, it doesn’t cost anything to try, but many webmasters learn that transaction based affiliate programs produce better than pay-per-click programs.
Is my site better suited to specific product endorsements?
If you run an online travel agency, for example, you could also promote travel insurance, luggage, pre-paid calling cards, and other travel related products. Because your affiliate products directly relate to your clients interests, you are more likely to have success, than if you have Google text links, promoting weight loss or home repair services.
How much control do I want regarding ad content?
Some ad networks ask for a location on your site, and they decide the content. Sometimes it relates to your site, sometimes it’s totally unrelated. Others allow you to choose the specific content, the graphics and message.
Will the ads I choose fit with both my site design, and my company image? Would I be happy with weight loss products displaying on my financial services website?Or with dating ads appearing on my children’s bookstore site? What steps will I take, to ensure that I don’t unintentionally abuse the trust of my visitors?
Some ad campaigns promote services of questionable quality, or even of questionable legality / morality. Your visitors will hold you accountable, so it’s wise to visit the site of a prospective affiliate and see what they offer, if they have a guarantee, etc.
Too see if they are a reputable company run this simple test. Of course, even the best company will get complaints, but notice the volume of complaints. Simply Google the name of the company with the term "complaint" or "sucks" after it. For example: "ABC Company sucks." Don’t forget the quotation marks, and please excuse the choice of words. To see what people are saying, you need to Google with the words they use.
Payment details: Some programs pay a finder’s fee – ranging from $0.50 to over $100 per lead or sale. Others offer a percentage of any sales generated from the referral from your site (from 1% up to over 75%).
How they pay: Some fringe programs might never pay. It's best to stick to established programs, at least at first, to ensure that you get paid. Some require PayPal accounts or a mailing address for checks.
Refunds: When a refund is made on a product, your account will be deducted the amount of the commission for that order. It’s good to confirm other details on refunds with the program.
Tracking: Does the program provide a method to track clicks, purchases, leads? Without this, how will you know if they are paying you correctly? Most sites have a dashboard of your account, showing daily, weekly and monthly traffic stats.
Use of cookies: A larger program should make use of 14 or 30 day cookies, which means that if you refer a visitor to a site, and they leave without making a purchase, but return next week and then buy, you’ll get credit for the referral and you’ll get your commission.
Allowable marketing techniques: Some programs prohibit specific means of marketing, use of trademarked content (logos, images and slogans) or use of their company name in search marketing.

Not all programs are the same, but many will require:

6 Easy Ways to Monetize a Site

The list below provides ways to monetize that won't take up a lot of your time, so you can focus on building your site with good content and growing your traffic. These are the most basic (and arguably the least profitable) methods, but they are effective interim monetizing strategies.
As with most strategies regarding money, diversification is key. Try a combination of these methods to maximize earning potential (without making your site too ad heavy). Play around with your layout, if it's flexible, to give different ads more or less exposure (don't let them overshadow your content). Test a variety of networks. Make sure you are being paid accurately and in a timely manner. Monitor your performance and if you are not happy with the service or results, try another company.
Google Adsense is the most popular and widely used option. They serve contextual ads (image or text) based on your content, and pay when someone clicks on the ad. How much you make on Adsense depends on several things. First, advertisers bid on keywords, so if you happen to write about a topic that has high paying keywords, then each click will be worth a lot more than another topic with low valued keywords (keywords that has really low bids). Also, people who came to your site from search engines are more likely to click on these ads than people who are repeat visitors. It makes sense then to spread out your Adsense ads to provide easy access for search visitors.
Other PPC options include Bidvertiser and AdToll.
Unlike CPC ads, CPM ads pay per impression. Viewers don't need to do anything for you to be paid. You just need to serve the ad to them. The downside is that you're paid almost nothing for each impression. Rates can go as low as $0.10 per thousand impressions. But it's still a good option to use in conjunction with CPC ads. CPM ads can be placed in less prominent spaces (below the fold) whereas CPC ads should have better position. Most ad networks that offer CPM ads have CPC ads thrown in as well. You can set your own prices and remove unappealing ads.
Networks that offer CPM/CPC ads include AdBrite and ValueClick Media.
CPA ads pay per action. Viewers don't just need to click on them, but they actually have to do something, either sign up/register or make a purchase. Not surprisingly, they are the highest paying ads. However, how likely your visitors will click on the ad and perform the desired action will depend very much on how relevant the ad is to your content. For example, a site about digital photography may do very well showing digital camera CPA ads. Some sites are much better suited for CPA ads. Consider whether any CPA ads would add value to your visitors.
Popular affiliates networks include Commission Junction, Adfish, and Amazon Associates.
Text links work the same way as the above. You set aside a space on your page and text links will start showing up when they are purchased. You need to submit specific pages into the inventory, so enter your most popular pages (homepage, category pages, and very popular articles). Rates are based on your PR, which has to do with how many other sites link to your page. If you often get linked and mentioned, text links may be profitable for your site.
Some text link companies are Link Worth, TNX.net, and Text-Link-Ads.
In-text ads don't require any additional real estate, which is attractive to many site owners. Ads are attached to text in your content, showing up as underlined or double underlined words that are clickable. Some will pop up a little advertisement when the word is moused over. Many viewers, however, find these ads distracting.
Popular companies are Kontera and Vibrant Media.
Offering a feed of your content is essential. More and more readers are using feeds to catch up with their favorite sites, and not offering one will alienate a lot of readers who would be interested in your content. There is yet to be a lot of advertising options within feeds, but for now you can still monetize the traffic to your feed.

You want to earn $100 per day online? Do this at least once a day (but don't overdo it!)

Would an additional $100 per day change your life? Financial, unless you really right now, probably not fight.

42 Free WordPress Themes

A great WordPress theme makes an average site exceptional. A theme is what gives WordPress its function and appearance. Traditionally used for blogging, themes also give structure to a regular Web site.These recommended free themes are not trial versions, but fully functional premium themes by some of the best design companies online. They can be downloaded and used right away. Something to remember is that free designs often receive little, if any, support from the company. WooThemes has one of the larger sets of quality free themes available. At time of publishing, WooThemes is offering 10 different premium themes for free. Ranging from magazine, multimedia and personal blogs – you’ll likely find what you’re looking for here. They have a great support network and forum (extra cost).
Currently UpThemes have two free themes:
Holding Pattern is a placeholder that can be placed as a landing page, and can collect email addresses of visitors.Gallery is a perfect theme for a portfolio of design or photography. Also displays video very well.
Offering five free themes, these are older and tired looking themes. The one theme that looks most promising to me is called: UBD Moneymaker Theme It is by far the most popular theme, and is very functional. Depending on the application, the other four might do fine.
Despite having a great set of premium themes, they only offer one free theme, and this one is quite basic. Profile is more like a mini Web site than a blog – which could be perfect for you, depending on your needs. Afterburner comes with 8 style presents, and 14 widget areas for full but simple customization. Is promoted as “The Fastest WordPress Theme Ever”. While this may or may not be true, it’s likely true that it is a fast operating theme.Novus is a clean and fast loading theme. Comes with 12 widget positions and is fully translatable. Minimalist design.
Selecta, the free theme offered by Obox, is a personal style theme best suited for high volume of videos and photos. Sort of a retro style design, it comes with a video slider and widgetized footer area.
To showcase photos or artwork, Graph Paper Press designs some of the nicest themes available. Currently nine of their twenty themes are available for free. The free themes come with free video tutorials which teach how to install and customize each one. The free themes can also be pay themes, which will then give you pro support. When you pay for support (currently $49 per quarter, or $99 per year) you actually get all of the themes and pro support for each one. Compare the free and pay versions.

ecoNews Comes with homepage photo slideshow, sidebar ad areas and Facebook / Twitter integration.ecoMicro Micro-blogging theme is very basic and has a similar look to Twitter.ecoBlog Classic blog theme with social integration.
While I would be negligent not to mention WordPress.org, I'm not that confident that you'll find what you need for your business. The themes are often too basic and too difficult to handle that often they only have a fit for personal use (and that gets less likely every year). They boast over 1200 themes. Check them out.

10 Get Started Blogging Tips

The key to success lies in reader retention. For that, you need the right focus, engaging content and the right promotion to attract readers and keep them coming back for more.
Take the time to follow these 10 steps and you’ll be on the right path toward publishing a successful, potentially profitable, blog.
Research:
Before jumping headfirst into the blogosphere, you need to educate yourself on what does and doesn’t work. Read popular blogs, including those with a general appeal and those related to topics that interest you. Look at visitor comments and take note of what they like or dislike about the content and design. Mimic what works and find an innovative way to improve upon what doesn’t. Take a look at these sites for some tips:
Find Your Niche:
A successful blog must have mass appeal and a focus broad enough to ensure you have plenty to write about. But the subject can’t bore you to tears or you’re setting yourself up for failure. For example, if you write exclusively about the daily life of your cat, Mr. Fluffykins, it’s pretty unlikely that many others will find it as fascinating as you. However, if you’re a cat lover, writing about cat health opens the door to a wider audience, a wealth of potential topics and great opportunities for readers to share their own tips and experiences -- particularly if you use pictures, anecdotes, memes and other elements to illustrate your blog.
Establish Credibility:
Anyone with access to the Internet can have a blog, but not everyone has the credibility to make a blog meaningful. You don’t have to be a master painter to blog about art, but it helps gain the trust of your readers if you take the time to explain your interest and spell out your credentials (just be careful not to take on a tone of superiority or you’ll risk alienating your readers).
Establish Measurable Goals:
Set goals (i.e. building community, generating revenue, gaining RSS subscriptions, etc.) for your blog and establish a timeframe for achieving them so you can measure its success. Construct a one-year plan, including checkpoints where you evaluate whether you have met your goals and to measure the overall growth of your blog.
Network:
Identify other blogs that are similar to your own and start networking with their authors. It’s an easy way to keep informed about what is happening in the blogosphere, even before you’ve launched your own blog. It is also a great way to subtly refer people to your blog once it’s published, and to enhance your own credibility by contributing your thoughts and opinions.
Craft Engaging Content:
Quality content is vital to the life of a blog. Read and research as much as possible to ensure you’re up-to-date on the latest in whatever subject your blog is focused on. What is equally important is conveying that knowledge in an entertaining way. Have fun with your writing and give it some personality. If your content is stiff and technical, your readers will be turned off and lose interest quickly.
Introduce Yourself:
Your first post should introduce yourself (use a pseudonym if desired) and detail the purpose of your blog. Include your credentials as well as your interest in the subject matter. Offer fun notes about yourself and make it personable. If your readers feel that they know you, they will be more loyal and engaged in your blog.
Be Consistent:
Consistent publishing of posts per day, the length of posts, content quality, and theme design builds trust, dependability and readership. Decide how many posts you are going to publish per day and stick to that. Readers appreciate consistency.
Build Community:
Once you begin publishing your blog, make it a point to seek out and participate in communities such as Digg, del.icio.us, Facebook, Twitter and Blog Catalog. This lets you build a blog community, as well as generate traffic and promote your blog.
Maintenance:
Regularly updating content (posts, forums, and comments) encourages readers to return to your blog. Always invite others to comment and, when they do, thank them for their thoughts. Assess the needs of your readers and add featured content such as a series to satisfy their interest. Maintaining content shows your commitment to your readers and subscribers.
